Allison is a 15 year old AKC Registered Bichon Frise with cataracts and a severe heart murmur. After 15 years, the people she was with decided not to keep her. Senior dogs are more difficult to place, and when you add that she’s nearly blind and has a heart problem, well, it doesn’t get any easier. Because Allison has such a sweet disposition, we decided that we would do what we could for her, make her as comfortable as we could for whatever time she had. We do everything we can in our current facility (you can help us with our new building) but we really wanted her in a home.
Thankfully, Allison’s angel arrived. She is now in a home where she will be comforted, cared for and loved for the rest of her days.
Meet Smoochy: He is a Soft coat Fox Terrier Mix. He has a beautiful home now but a few months ago Smoochy wasn’t as lucky. Early on a Monday morning, the Humane Society staff discovered four dogs, a mom and 3 pups, dumped in our dog exercise pen. All four were in such bad shape that they brought tears to the eyes of the staff that saw them. Smoochy was the smallest and weakest of the group. The dogs were virtually hairless, had bleeding lesions from massive skin infections, malnourished and dehydrated. Our veterinarian didn’t give them a good prognosis but, with the help and dedication of our wonderful staff, they all recovered after about eight months of intensive treatment. The cost for treatment was about $1200 per dog and untold amounts of love and affection from our staff. I am happy to say that all four dogs now have their own loving family.
Pavlov the cat came to us at 10 years old after his owner decided she had too many cats. Having never been vaccinated, the stress of being in a shelter took its toll. Pavlov got sic, refused food and water, and sat with his head pressed against the cage. Animal Services staff called the Humane Society to rescue him and his two sisters. After 4 months of of foster-home love and affection (and a huge course of meds) Pavlov was so loved by his foster mom she couldn't part with him. He is King of the Castle now!!!
Meet Earl! One of our foster-moms awoke to terrible crying outside her door. On her front lawn was a handsome 10 week old min-pinix. Earl, as he was soon to be called had probably been thrown from moving car, suffering two broken front legs. Thanks to our wonderful Shores Animal Hospital, Earl was given two adorable casts. A few months later (and with some love and patience from our Animal are Manager, (Jaime) Earl made a full recovery! He now rules the roost at his new home, where they love him beyond all measure.
Squirt, along with his heartworm positive mom, and 5 siblings came to ACHS when he was only 2 days old. Infested heavily with worms and skin parasites, the puppies had many challenges during their 8 weeks of rehabilitation. Every puppy came through with shining colors and found wonderful homes with lots of room (since the puppies were almost 20 lbs at 8 weeks old that is a REALLY good thing!)
